Clutch Repairs

Clutch Mechanism Introduction

The clutch system is used to disengage power from the engine to the gearbox in order to change gears as you accellarate. The clutch is also required to put the gears in neutral when stopping at a robot.

The clutch system comprises of a cluch pedal within the driving compartment, normally the left pedal by your feet. from there is a Clutch Cable in the older models, and the later models has a hydraulic system, that connects the pedal with the Clutch Plate Assembly unit that is situated between the engine and gearbox.

The Clutch Plate Assembly Unit comprises of the following basic parts.

  1. Clutch Plate
  2. Pressure Plate
  3. Release Bearing
  4. Clutch Fork

The Pressure Plate is normally fixed to the engine's flywheel, and the clutch plate is fitted to the gearbox.Tension springs within the clutch assembly ensure friction and contact between the clutch plate and pressure plate.

How does the clutch work?

Clutch discs are attached to the hub of the flywheel pressure plate and interlocked in a shaft that extends from the gearbox, commonly called the clutch shaft or drive shaft, to the drive shaft and the flywheel.

The clutch moves along the axially driven shafts and rotates the clutches on the shaft when gripped between the flywheel and the pressure plates.

A uniform pressure is applied to each plate, which in turn pushes it firmly against the flywheel and pushes it against a firm flywheel.

What is the KTM Power Assist Slip Clutch (PASC) ?

The distance between piston and clutch plate is eliminated when the torque capacity is zero at the end of the clutch phase.

A slip-on mechanism called the KTM Power Assist Slip Clutch (PASC) is used to create a ramp between the pressure plates to compress the friction of the clutches against the disc clutch discs more strongly when accelerating.

The friction gap between the clutch disc and the flywheel pressure plate and the counter clutch is designed to ensure that gears shift smoothly.

Finally, the clutch is detached from the drive shaft and all gaps between pistons and clutch discs are eliminated, except for clutch torques close to zero.
